About Mothmade
Ko Ingarangi te whakapaparanga mai, engari, ko Ōtautahi te whenua tupu me te kāinga. Ko Lily Wenmoth au.
I started Mothmade after completing in Ōtautahi in 2021. Drawing, knitting and sewing have previously been my main art forms. But in 2021 I tried an introductory jewellery manufacturing course at Workspace studios and found my new favourite medium. Straight after the short course, I bought all the tools I could afford to continue the art from home and over time expanded my repertoire of creative techniques.
I still design, create, market, and send all jewellery myself. (With lots of love!)
Design inspiration comes from the Aotearoa's lush geography; the mossy hills from hikes in Mount Somers, water eroded rockfaces in and around the Catlins, the dry and sharp mountain geography of summer in Arthur’s Pass, and foamy and kelp filled waves at Sumner beach. Basically from everywhere I have the luxury of escaping to! Occasionally these flowing styles are met with a flare of brutalism which I attribute to finding charming moments in the urban, grey, concrete heavy, Ōtautahi Christchurch.
My designs are characterised by a playfulness, and are often organic, flowing forms with minuscule sculptural details in the metal, set with a variety of gemstones.
My Jewelery is primarily made from recycled sterling silver (sometimes gold for extra special comissions), thrifted pearls, found pebbles, and lab made faceted gemstones or natural gemstones from carefully selected suppliers who have statements of ethical sources. No precious metals are ever thrown away. All my off-cuts and scraps are melted down and reused. When designs involve casting, this process is done through an Auckland based casting company who are an accredited member of the Responsible Jewellery Council.
